The Seven Gables Hotel also had a well-known restaurant. On February 2, 1913, the Seven Gables dinner menu included roast possum and sweet potatoes, stewed chicken, roast pork and roast mutton, stewed prunes, stewed peaches, mashed potatoes, corn, string beans, macaroni, baked beans, celery, sweet pickles, slaw, cherry pie, peach pie, white bread, biscuits, and corn bread. The food was served “family style” and passed around the table in large bowls. (Courtesy of the PCHS.)

In 1886, A. C. French opened a cedar mill called the Burnside Manufacturing Company. He hired 50 employees and specialized in making cedar faucets, which were shipped to wineries in Europe. Later the company changed direction and manufactured rough cedar into pencil casings ready for the lead to be inserted. The casings were shipped to Germany, filled with lead, and returned to be sold as “penny pencils.” (Courtesy of the PCHS.)
